Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at a meeting?
After a brief general meeting for announcements, the group will break up into various tables. These include: First Time Table (intended for newcomers, who are welcome to stay at this table for as many meetings as they need; this table is moderated by a person who has been a member for some time); Topic Tables (a topic that is part of the grieving process is discussed by the group); Sibling Table (if in attendance, siblings are invited to talk about their unique grief with other siblings.)

Is there a charge to attend meetings?
There is no charge to attend meetings. Compassionate Friends operates from donations from members, families and friends.

The meetings are held at a church, is there a religious affiliation?
TCF has no religious affiliation. The meeting places are determined by what is available.

Will I have to talk if I attend a meeting?
No, it is up to you when and if you feel ready to share.

It has been several years since my child died, is it still appropriate for me to attend a meeting?
There is no timetable connected to grief. It is up to you as to how soon after you attend, or if you realize many years later that you have questions or concerns about your grief.

My child was an adult, not living at home, is it still appropriate for me to attend a meeting?
The age of a child does not matter. The age range of members goes from miscarriages to older adult children. Regardless, this was your child and you are in grief.

My husband or wife does not want to attend, can I attend alone?
Yes, you can. Grief is such a unique journey, and not all people find comfort in attending meetings. At some meetings, there are separate tables for men and women, so couples may choose to sit at different tables. In some cases, friends come to help support the grieving parent, grandparent or sibling.
