We understand how hard it is to walk into a TCF meeting after your child has died. It may be a few days, months or even years before you search for one of our meetings after the death of your child, grandchild or sibling. Whenever you do, remember there are members who will be there to greet you and help you to find a safe place for you to be supported and speak with you about your loss. You will be given a packet including Compassionate Friends information.
We ask you to fill out a member form so that we have your information and you can receive our monthly newsletter. (Information is kept private.)
After members are seated, there is a short meeting, welcoming everyone and letting you know who the leaders are of the group and any news that needs to be shared. There are other gatherings during each month and date/time will be shared at this time.
After the welcome, the sharing part of the meeting will start. There are tables set up for New Members and Seasoned Members and we suggest you start at the New Members table. In time you may want to move to another table and you will know when you are ready. The facilitator of your group will introduce themselves and share a little how the group table proceeds. We share our experiences and heartache, how we are coping and finding hope again on this journey. Together, we remember our child or children for the love, joy and memories held for them. Please know you do not need to share, only if you are comfortable doing so. Many times after you hear another share their story, you may feel like you would also. We go around the table, telling our story, and if you choose not to share the first time, you will have another chance to share later. Please know tears, crying and feelings are understood at these meetings. Tears are a natural release for a grieving person and is a way to help cleanse the body of toxins.
The meetings are on the first Thursday of each month and start at 7 pm until 9 pm. We have grief literature available for you at the meetings that may be helpful. Our group also has a library full of self-help Grief books, which may be taken home to read. We are a peer-to-peer support group, and not professional counselors or therapists.
